Drywall finish levels explained — what each one means and when you need it

When your contractor asks what drywall finish level you want, it helps to know what they’re actually asking. The level determines how smooth the final wall looks — and how much labour goes into it.

Levels 3, 4, and 5

Level 3 suits areas getting heavy texture. Level 4 is the standard for most painted walls. Level 5 adds a skim coat for the smoothest possible finish — worth it for walls under critical, raking light.

Which one you need

Most homes are well served by Level 4. Where sidelight from big windows hits a wall, Level 5 is what prevents every small imperfection from showing.
